Celebration on World Poetry Day by Assamese department in association with IQAC, Tezpur College

On the occasion of World Poetry Day: The Assamese Department of Tezpur College, in collaboration with the Internal Quality Assurance Cell, organized a special poetry event and an intimate discussion to mark ‘World Poetry Day.’ The program, jointly anchored by Mitali Saikia, the head of the Assamese Department, and Surajita Borah, a professor from the Education Department, welcomed distinguished guests Dr. Swadhinata Mahanta, a renowned litterateur, and Mridul Chaharia, a prominent poet.

In the inaugural address, the Principal, Dr. Manoj Kumar Hazarika, remarked that poetry emanates from the emotions of the human heart. Both poetry and music, he said, complement human life. Dr. Swadhinata Mahanta, in her speech, addressed the complexity of modern poetry, emphasizing that poems written in simple language resonate more profoundly with readers. Librarian and poet Mridul Chaharia, from the esteemed Gopinath Bordoloi Mental Health Institution, pointed out that poets carry a responsibility towards society just as readers must be conscious and studious in engaging with poetic creations.

Several professors, including the college librarian, contributed to the event's richness by reciting self-composed poems. As part of the occasion, the Assamese Department also organized a poetry competition. The statewide competition saw participation from many college students across Assam, with three winners securing top positions.

Krishnalina Kalita, an undergraduate student in her second semester from Cotton University, earned first place, receiving the Late Binapani Burhagohain Memorial Award. Prakash Dutta, a second-semester undergraduate from Lakhimpur Kherajkhat College, claimed second place and received the Late Tiloram Doley Memorial Award. Shivani Baruah, a sixth-semester undergraduate from Jorhat Kakajan College, secured third place, winning the Late Prafulla Saikia Memorial Award.

It is noteworthy that these awards were sponsored respectively by Mitali Saikia, the head of the Assamese Department; Merumithu Kotoki, an alumni, author, and journalist; and Madhurima Saikia, who is currently based in Barpeta.
