Overview
A Brief History:
The Department of English of Tezpur College came into being in the year 1965. It merges with the founding year of the college itself. Initially, classes were held in Tezpur Academy with 122 students enrolled in Pre-University classes. The College was granted the permission to start degree-classes in 1967, and in the same year Mr. Rabindranath Borthakur was appointed as a full-time lecturer. Classes were shifted to the present college-precincts in the year 1968. As per the ordinance of Gauhati University, a second lecturer Mr. Jogendranath Choudhury was appointed in the department in 1968. With the enrolment of 33 students in the Degree First-year class and with the induction of a third full-time lecturer, Mr. Birendra Nath Barua in 1969, the Department of English became a full-fledged department under the headship of Mr. Rabindranath Borthakur. He left in 1975. Mr J Choudhury became the HOD and continued in the same capacity till 1997 when he took up as the Principal of the College. Mrs. Moromi Goswami joined against the lien vacancy of Mr. R Borthakur in 1975 and went on to become a permanent lecturer in 1977. The department grew with the sanctioning of two additional posts and the introduction of Honours courses in 1987. The Honours course was introduced in the department in the academic year 1986-87 and the first batch of students passed out in 1989. Mr. Maniklal Bhanja joined the Department in 1987. Mr. Birendranath Baruah retired in March, 1994 and the post was filled with the appointment of Deepsikha Saharia in September in the same year. Mrs. Rita Saikia Dutta was appointed in November, 1994. When Mr. J N Choudhury became the Principal of the College in 1998, Mrs. Bornali Konwar filled the vacant post. Mrs. Deepsikha Saharia left the department in 2008. Dr. Dharmendra Baruah was appointed in her place in May, 2010. Dr. Moromi Goswami retired in February, 2014. In the year 2022, Dr Bandana Sharma and Rajarshi Nath joined the Department as permanent faculty members.
