DEPARTMENT'S HISTORY:
The department was established in the year 1965. The Economics department offers undergrad courses affiliated with Gauhati University. The undergraduate economics course started in the academic year 1968–69, and the honors course started in the academic session 1972-73. Late Padma Prasad, then acting Principal was the only Lecturer of the department in 1965.
ECONOMICS DEPARTMENT LIBRARY:
The Departmental Library has a book strength of 482 comprising of higher secondary books, degree books, and others, and 1 computer set.
ECONOMIC FORUM:
Since the beginning of the department (1965), it has had a planning forum that was headed by Prof. Dinesh Ch. Das (Retd.) till his retirement (i.e, 2001). In April 2001, the Economic Forum of the department was formed under the chairmanship of Dr. Jayashri Kalita (Retd.), then HoD, Economics , Dr. Pradip Ch. Mahanta, as secy. ,of the forum and other faculty members Prof. Dandadhar Boruah (Retd.) Dr. Basanta Kalita, Dr. Gita Rani Das, Mr. Debajit Dutta, Dr. Arati Bharali as members of the forum. From then, the department has been organizing various activities to uplift the students’ knowledge and performance regarding presentation of seminars, writing articles, workshops to know about their self-employment generation, income generation, symposiums like quiz and debate competitions, etc.
The forum has been publishing Departmental Bulletin- ECONOMICA since 2009-10. The Economics Department provides Financial Aid of Rs. 5000 to
Students who secure the highest marks in BA Final Examination, obtaining above 8 points since 2012. The department also provides a sum of Rs. 2000 to students of Higher Secondary level who secure a star mark with 80 percent in the subject Economics from the year 2012.
